AdSense Setup: Connect Your Site and Prepare for Approval

Build a clear application record, connect WordPress correctly and respond to review issues with evidence.

Level Beginner to implementationDeliverable An application and correction recordSource review September 11, 2026

YOUR PRACTICAL OUTPUT

An application-readiness record

Use your own evidence or label a fictional exercise clearly.

Define the result you are trying to reach

Your first objective is a correctly identified publisher account and a site that Google can assess. Approval is a later decision, and a functioning advertising business requires further work. Keep those outcomes separate so that a successful technical check does not become an unsupported claim of acceptance or income.

This guide takes a self-hosted WordPress publisher from preparation to a documented review request, then through common troubleshooting decisions. Its deliverable is an application record: account owner, submitted site, connection method, observed status, open issue and next action. It does not activate ads on AffiliateBest or represent a tested personal application.

Before applying, use Display Advertising Foundations and Publisher Economics to decide whether the likely operating workload fits your publication. Approval alone is not evidence that advertising will cover your costs.

Separate six different milestones

MilestoneEvidence to recordWhat it does not prove
Account createdYou can access the intended AdSense accountThe account or every site is approved
Site connectedThe ownership check succeeds for the submitted siteIts content passes review
Review requestedThe account shows a submitted or pending reviewA decision has been made
Site approvedThe site status allows advertising, subject to remaining actionsEvery page or impression will receive an ad
Ads servingEligible requests produce advertising under the configured setupReported earnings are finalized or payable
Payment completedA matching payment transaction is confirmedFuture payments or earnings are guaranteed

Use these as separate rows in your own record. A screenshot saying that code was placed belongs to the connection row. A bank receipt belongs to the payment row. This evidence discipline makes support requests more precise and prevents an enthusiastic setup report from overstating progress.

Check eligibility before spending time on integration

Google’s eligibility page calls for your own original, policy-compliant content, access to the site’s HTML and an applicant aged at least 18. Hosted services such as Blogger and YouTube have their own application paths. Follow the route for the property you actually operate.

Official source: Eligibility requirements.

Do not turn an anecdotal approval story into a rule such as “publish thirty articles” or “reach a particular word count.” The eligibility source does not establish those universal guarantees. Our readiness test is qualitative: can a visitor accomplish something useful, understand who publishes the material and move through a finished publication?

Write down why each main content type deserves to exist. A comparison should help a reader make a decision; a tutorial should explain a working process; a reference page should answer its stated question. If a page is only a title, a promotional link or a copy of a supplier description, expand its actual value before treating it as application evidence.

Prepare a finished reader journey

Use a small representative walkthrough before submitting: the home page, a category or learning hub, a substantive article and the route back to related material. Open it while signed out, on both a phone and a desktop. Check that promised content exists and that the route is understandable without knowledge of your administration panel.

This is our practical preparation workflow, not an official numerical approval score. Record specific defects: a menu leading to an empty category, an unfinished comparison, a missing explanation of who owns the publication or an intrusive overlay that blocks reading. Fix the underlying issue instead of adding decorative text to make the site look larger.

Describe your real publishing and commercial practices in the relevant trust information. Do not copy another publisher’s claims about testing, expertise or privacy arrangements. A policy page that describes tools you do not use is poor operating documentation even if the page looks complete.

For an affiliate publication, explain your evaluation method and add useful analysis beyond merchant material. Keep the reader’s decision at the center of the page. A collection of outbound buttons does not demonstrate the same editorial work as a reasoned comparison with limitations and alternatives.

Identify the correct existing account

Google generally allows one AdSense account per publisher. Additional sites can use the existing account. Its guidance separately addresses a genuinely separate organization with correctly matching organization information; that is not a workaround for a rejected personal application. If access is lost, use the account recovery or access-management route.

Official source: More than one AdSense account.

Before starting, establish which Google login owns or administers the publisher account. If someone previously managed advertising for the publication, reconcile that history before creating another application. Keep the publisher identity and access owner in a private operations record, without publishing login details.

Do not register a replacement identity to bypass a termination or rejection. A duplicate-account notice and a site-quality notice require different remedies. Preserve the exact notice so that the next action responds to the actual problem.

Create the account with accurate information

Google’s documented starting point is the AdSense sign-up page: sign in with the intended Google Account, enter your site URL or choose to add it later, choose the help preference, select the payment country or territory, review the terms and start using AdSense. Account access can precede completion of all setup tasks.

Choose the country where you currently live and can receive the mailed PIN, following Google’s instructions. Google says the country or territory cannot later be changed inside AdSense. Do not select a different country because a tutorial promises better advertising rates.

Official source: Create an AdSense account.

Continue with the account-specific information requested on your dashboard. Copy names and addresses carefully from the appropriate real records. If you are uncertain about the correct publisher entity, resolve it before submitting conflicting details. Keep a dated note of what was submitted, but store sensitive payment information outside public project files.

For an existing account, start with its site-management workflow instead of repeating registration. Check the final public domain carefully, including redirects to your preferred hostname. A staging address is not a substitute for the publication readers will actually visit.

Choose one documented ownership method

Google’s connection guide offers an AdSense code snippet, an ads.txt snippet or a verification meta tag. The code and meta tag belong in the document head; ads.txt belongs at the site root. Follow the option shown for your site, confirm implementation, verify it and request review when ready. Google describes review as usually a few days, sometimes two to four weeks; this is not a promised deadline.

Official source: Connect your site to AdSense.

MethodWhat to verify locallyOperating implication
AdSense codeThe intended publisher snippet appears in the rendered headPlan ad delivery and consent before enabling serving
Verification meta tagThe account value matches the selected account in the rendered headOwnership evidence alone does not load an ad unit
ads.txtThe root URL returns the intended seller recordAuthorization data is separate from a page’s ad implementation

Use the value supplied by your own dashboard. An example from a tutorial or another site is not your account identifier. Decide who maintains the chosen method and where that configuration lives. Installing all available methods without a reason makes later troubleshooting harder.

Connect WordPress with a clear integration owner

Google recommends Site Kit for WordPress. Its documented setup installs and activates Site Kit by Google, completes the plugin setup and connects the AdSense service. The plugin can place the AdSense code across the site. AdSense account settings remain separate from plugin setup.

Official source: Connect AdSense on WordPress.

In Site Kit, use Settings → Connect More Services → AdSense. Its documentation explains that the connected Google account must match the intended AdSense access. If Site Kit places the snippet, remove another existing placement of that same integration to avoid duplication. If code placement is declined, Site Kit can still place verification meta tags. Site Kit does not manually insert individual ad units.

Official source: Site Kit AdSense documentation.

Our implementation rule is one accountable owner for the global integration. Before changing anything, identify whether a plugin, a tag-insertion setting or custom code already adds it. Keep a rollback note. Do not paste a head snippet into an article body and assume the two locations are interchangeable.

Prefer a maintainable configuration over editing a parent theme file that an update can replace. After any change, inspect the public response rather than trusting the saved setting alone. If another legitimate advertising component exists, understand its purpose before removing it; “one owner” does not mean deleting every unrelated advertising script.

Treat ads.txt as seller authorization

Google describes ads.txt as a way to identify authorized sellers and strongly recommends it, while saying its use is not mandatory. Copy the account’s exact seller line and publish it at the root address ending in /ads.txt. Add the relevant record to an existing file rather than discarding other legitimate network records. Status updates can take days, or up to a month when the site makes few ad requests; AdSense provides a recheck action.

Official source: Ads.txt guide.

On WordPress, establish whether hosting serves a physical file or an installed component generates that URL. The practical test is the public response. A text file stored in a theme folder does not automatically become the root endpoint, and a page whose title is “ads.txt” is not sufficient evidence either.

Open the root URL while signed out and compare its contents with the maintained record. Check for a not-found page, an HTML wrapper or an old cached response. Ask the hosting or integration owner to correct the endpoint if necessary. Do not overwrite a file until you understand who manages it and can restore the previous version.

A seller record does not itself add an advertising position. Treat “record visible,” “record recognized by Google” and “site approved” as separate observations. This avoids repeatedly modifying a correct file while waiting for a different review process.

Diagnose what Google can reach

Google’s not-ready guidance identifies missing or incomplete code, inaccessible sites, insufficient unique content and policy issues. It also says detected Search Console ownership can provide verification. That detection does not approve the site’s content. Its access checks include the correct URL, public availability, crawler access and valid SSL when using HTTPS.

Official source: Site not ready to show ads.

Begin with the exact submitted URL in a signed-out browser. Follow the redirect and record the final address. Compare the served page with the page you intended to submit. Then inspect the relevant head markup or root text endpoint. Clear only the necessary cache after a verified change and check the public response again.

If hosting or a content-delivery service returns a challenge, ask its owner to inspect the relevant request and rule. Avoid disabling all protection as a diagnostic shortcut. Public editorial pages should be reachable; administration screens and private data do not need to become public. Record the narrow change and its rollback.

A successful browser visit is useful evidence but does not prove every crawler request succeeds. When the account continues to report access failure, include the submitted address, final address, response observed, affected time and relevant hosting evidence in your support request. Do not include passwords or full payment details.

Submit once ready and preserve the review record

Complete the connection check and the actions shown in your account, then submit through the available review control. Record the date, site, method and exact resulting status. Interface labels can change, so the current dashboard is the authority for the action available to your account.

While a review is pending, keep the publication available and continue normal editorial work. Avoid changing its domain or integration repeatedly without an identified reason. A controlled maintenance change should have a short note so that a later failure can be related to what actually changed.

Use the documented review range as planning context, not a countdown to automatic acceptance. If the status remains unresolved, first check for a requested action or email and use the help route available in the account. Another application with another login does not explain or resolve the original status.

Our review record has five fields: submitted state, observed state, evidence, responsible person and next check. “Still waiting” is less useful than a dated statement that the site remains reachable and the account requests no additional action.

Match the correction to the actual notice

Google’s account-rejection guidance separates duplicate accounts from site-content problems. It lists insufficient content, content quality, policy violations, navigation, traffic sources and unsupported language among the issues to address. The account or notification supplies the reason for the specific application; a generic checklist cannot substitute for it.

Official source: Account not approved.

Observed issueFocused responseAvoid
Duplicate-account noticeIdentify the account history and follow the account-specific resolution instructionsClosing an unfamiliar account without first establishing ownership and impact
Incomplete reader journeyFinish the promised material and repair the affected navigationPublishing many new empty pages
Weak original valueAdd supported analysis, explanation or a genuinely useful toolRephrasing copied material merely to change its wording
Policy or traffic concernRead the cited requirement and correct the affected practiceMoving the same practice to another account
Connection or access problemReproduce the failure at the submitted URLRewriting unrelated content before checking the endpoint

These are diagnostic recommendations, not guaranteed approval recipes. Do not mass-delete useful pages because a forum suggests a smaller site is easier to approve. Establish which material is defective and why. If you retire a page, preserve a sensible reader route and document the editorial decision.

Create a small correction log before requesting review again

Use one row per identified problem: exact notice, affected URL or setting, proposed correction, verification evidence and completion date. A technical correction needs a public response check; an editorial correction needs a reader-value explanation. “Updated website” is too vague to assess.

For example, an invented equipment publication finds that its comparison page repeats manufacturer specifications and links to an unfinished buying guide. Its correction is a supported comparison of practical tradeoffs and a completed guide that explains the decision. The evidence is the finished reader journey. That does not guarantee acceptance, but it addresses an identifiable weakness.

In a separate invented case, a site’s verification tag is present only in an administrator preview. The correction is to place the selected method through the responsible integration and verify the signed-out response. Adding ten articles would not correct that particular connection failure.

Resubmit using the account’s available workflow after the relevant corrections are complete and any stated waiting conditions are met. If you cannot identify the issue, ask a precise support question with the notice and non-sensitive evidence. Do not label a resubmission successful until its actual result is known.

Prepare serving and consent as a separate release

Approval is the handoff to an advertising implementation decision. Decide which page types can carry ads, which integration owns delivery and how you will inspect the reader experience. Keep the initial scope small enough to evaluate. Return to the economics guide for a consistent revenue and cost model.

Google requires a certified CMP integrated with the IAB TCF when serving personalized ads to users in the EEA, UK and Switzerland. Its certification is not a full assessment of compliance with privacy law. A generic cookie banner or a completed site review does not establish that your actual advertising configuration meets the applicable requirements.

Official source: Publisher consent management requirements.

Google’s WordPress guidance highlights the option to avoid immediate serving on activation while resolving consent configuration. Make that decision before connecting a setup that could begin delivery. Detailed placement and consent implementation belongs to the next specialist lesson; do not treat a future lesson as permission to launch an unfinished setup.

Payment readiness also needs its own account-specific check. Record outstanding verification or payment actions separately from site status, and reconcile actual transactions before describing cash as received. This guide makes no claim that a reader’s account has completed those steps.

Finish with an evidence-based handoff

Content readinessRepresentative signed-out reader journey completed; identified defects resolved
Site connectionSubmitted domain and chosen ownership method agree with the public response

Serving handoffPlacement, consent and measurement work assigned before launch

Exercise 1: Site Kit says the code was placed, but AdSense says the site is being reviewed. Which milestone is complete? Connection implementation has evidence; site approval does not yet have evidence.

Exercise 2: The root seller file is correct in your browser, but its dashboard status has not updated. What should you record? The local result and time, the separate dashboard result and the available recheck action. Do not claim that either observation proves content approval.

Exercise 3: A publisher wants a new login after a content rejection. What is the appropriate next step? Identify the existing account’s notice, correct the stated problem and follow its review workflow. A different login does not improve the content.

COMPLETE THE WORK

An application-readiness record

Document which setup and readiness checks you have actually completed. Keep account review status separate from your own site checks.

Fields to include

Check; observed result; evidence date; account or site scope; unresolved issue; next action.

Review before proceeding

Does every claimed completion have evidence? A submitted application is not an approval, and an approval is not a revenue forecast.

Record what remains open

Give each unresolved item an owner and a next check. Mark an unperformed test as unverified. Keep the original evidence alongside the decision so you can revisit it when conditions change.

Sources, scope and independence
