DISCOVERY WITH INTENT
Search from the audience decision outward
Begin with the problem, use case, location, budget and traffic channel validated in Module 05. Searching only for “high-paying affiliate programs” reverses the process: it selects the commission first and asks whether the reader needs the product later.
- List the solutions readers already consider
Include products, services, free tools, do-it-yourself methods and the option to do nothing. This establishes the real decision set.
- Check official advertiser sites
Search the company footer, partner pages, help center and terms for “affiliate”, “referral”, “partner” or “publisher”. A direct program may not appear in every network directory.
- Search official marketplaces and networks
Use category, service area, eligibility, payout model and channel filters where available. Open the exact program profile rather than relying on an old listicle.
- Research by product and merchant
Product marketplaces, competitor disclosures and vendor comparison pages can reveal programs, but verify every candidate against the current official profile and contract.
- Create a longlist before applying
Record program owner, exact offer, region, payable event, application URL, review date and missing evidence. Do not submit bulk applications to programs you have not evaluated.
A product can deserve coverage without paying commission. Keeping at least one credible non-affiliate alternative protects the usefulness of the comparison and reveals when commercial availability is distorting editorial judgment.
AUTHORIZATION MAP
Account access does not automatically authorize an offer or channel
| Layer | What it means | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Platform access | Your publisher or partner account may use the network or partnership platform. | Account status, verified promotional properties and platform-wide policies. |
| Advertiser approval | A specific brand has accepted you into a specific program, often for a defined region or partner type. | Program name, contract version, approval notice and effective date. |
| Offer and channel permission | The exact product, creative, claim, country and traffic method are allowed under current terms. | Offer rules, permitted media, prohibited keywords, landing page and written clarification. |
A brand may run multiple regional, creator or performance programs. Approval to one does not imply approval to all. If paid search, email, coupon, trademark bidding, direct linking, sub-affiliates or incentive traffic is unclear, obtain written clarification before promotion.
FATAL GATES FIRST
Reject an offer before scoring it when a non-negotiable fails
- The product appears deceptive, unsafe, illegal for the target market or dependent on claims you cannot substantiate.
- The program does not permit your actual traffic channel, content format, geography or audience type.
- The promised customer outcome, total price, renewal, cancellation or refund conditions cannot be explained clearly.
- The payable event, validation rules, attribution, reversal causes or payment responsibility remain materially unclear.
- The merchant journey is broken, misleading or unusable for the intended device, language, currency or location.
- The expected approved value cannot cover your controllable production or acquisition cost under conservative assumptions.
- Promotion would create a conflict with the reader's interest or expose your brand to unacceptable legal, platform or reputation risk.
Weights compare acceptable candidates; they do not convert a prohibited, harmful or unverifiable offer into a suitable one.
PRODUCT VALUE AUDIT
Evaluate the customer's likely result before the affiliate payout
Problem fit
Define the exact job the product performs, the suitable user and the conditions in which another option is better.
First-hand evidence
Use the product, demo, trial or documented workflow where practical. State the access level and never imply testing you did not perform.
Outcome and limitations
Separate demonstrated capabilities from marketing claims. Record important exclusions, dependencies, learning curve and failure cases.
Total customer cost
Check setup fees, tiers, usage limits, renewal pricing, add-ons, shipping, taxes and realistic switching cost.
Support and retention
Inspect onboarding, documentation, response options, cancellation and whether the product remains valuable after purchase.
Reputation evidence
Look for repeated complaint patterns and merchant responses. Treat unverified ratings as signals to investigate, not proof.
Google's review guidance emphasizes user perspective, evidence of experience, quantitative measures, meaningful competitors, benefits, drawbacks and best-fit use cases. Build the product review around those decision factors instead of rewriting the sales page.
MERCHANT CONVERSION AUDIT
Your recommendation hands the visitor to a funnel you do not control
| Checkpoint | What to test | Failure signal |
|---|---|---|
| Message match | Does the destination continue the promise, product and audience context of your link? | Generic homepage, unavailable item or changed offer. |
| Mobile experience | Can a visitor understand, compare and complete the action on a real phone? | Layout obstruction, slow response or unusable form. |
| Trust and clarity | Are company identity, claims, pricing, billing, privacy and support understandable? | Hidden conditions, unsupported claims or unclear seller. |
| Conversion friction | How many fields, steps and account requirements separate the click from the payable event? | Unexpected registration, errors or unnecessary data. |
| Location fit | Are language, inventory, currency, delivery, tax and eligibility correct for the audience? | Geo-block, wrong currency or unsupported country. |
| Post-purchase reality | Are activation, fulfilment, returns, cancellation and support consistent with the promise? | Confusing renewal or systematic refund complaints. |
Test the intended landing page from the actual target country and device where possible. Never place a real order solely to manipulate tracking; follow merchant test-order rules and disclose test access appropriately.
CONTRACT & TERMS MATRIX
Translate program language into operating rules
| Record exactly | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Payable event | Sale, qualified lead, install, trial, deposit or another action? Which products, customers and order values qualify? |
| Reward | Fixed, percentage, tiered, bonus or recurring? Before or after tax, shipping, discount and refund? |
| Attribution | What is the referral window and model? Are promo codes, cross-device, app, repeat purchase and existing customers covered? |
| Validation | How long is the pending period? Which cancellations, returns, duplicate leads, fraud flags or quality tests reverse value? |
| Traffic | Are SEO, paid search, paid social, organic social, email, coupon, cashback, incentive, direct linking and sub-affiliates allowed? |
| Brand use | What trademark, domain, bidding, ad-copy, logo, creative-editing and promo-code restrictions apply? |
| Claims and content | Which disclosures, approvals, disclaimers and prohibited claims apply? Can prices and promotions be stated? |
| Payment | Who pays, in which currency, on what schedule and threshold? Which fees, tax documents and inactivity rules apply? |
| Change and termination | How are term changes announced, what happens to pending commissions and how quickly must links or creatives be removed? |
Save the contract, program profile or dated notes when permitted. A remembered commission rate is not a control system; terms can vary by region, partner and time.
APPROVED ECONOMICS
Model value after validation, not before it
Before data exists, build a conservative range using plausible click-to-action rate, average commission and approval rate from Module 04. Label it as an assumption. Platform EPC can help screen candidates, but it combines other partners, traffic mixes and periods; it is not your forecast.
- Use qualified outbound clicks, not page views, as the offer-level denominator.
- Separate pending, approved, reversed and paid value.
- Segment by page, placement, channel, device, country and sub-ID where permitted.
- Do not rank offers after a handful of conversions; show the sample size and uncertainty.
- Compare time-to-cash and working-capital exposure as well as eventual commission.
- For paid traffic, stop at the pre-agreed loss limit; never scale from unapproved revenue.
OPERATING QUALITY
A good program must remain manageable after approval
Tracking
Deep links, sub-IDs, promo-code tracking, mobile or app coverage and a documented troubleshooting path.
Reporting
Useful status detail, event dates, rejection reasons, export access and stable identifiers for reconciliation.
Communication
A named or reachable contact, current documentation, response expectations and advance notice for material changes.
Assets
Accurate landing pages, feeds, creatives and promotion details that can be kept current without misleading users.
Payments
Clear payer, threshold, schedule, currency, fees, tax requirements and a process for disputed or missing amounts.
Stability
Reasonable funding and payment history, predictable validation and no unexplained pattern of sudden reversals.
100-POINT OFFER SCORECARD
Compare only candidates that passed every fatal gate
| Criterion | Maximum | Evidence for a strong score |
|---|---|---|
| Audience and problem fit | 20 | Direct match to the validated use case, location, budget and intent. |
| Product and customer value | 20 | Credible outcome, fair total cost, understood limitations and acceptable support. |
| Merchant conversion experience | 15 | Relevant, trustworthy and low-friction path on the target device and geography. |
| Program rules and channel fit | 15 | Your real promotion method is explicitly permitted and key conditions are clear. |
| Approved economics | 15 | Conservative approved EPC, manageable reversals and viable contribution. |
| Tracking, reporting and support | 10 | Diagnostic data, useful identifiers, reliable communication and payment process. |
| Resilience and reputation | 5 | Acceptable brand risk with replaceable alternatives and limited concentration. |
80–100: primary test candidate. 65–79: secondary candidate or test only after closing evidence gaps. Below 65: reject or research further. These thresholds are internal planning heuristics, not promises of performance.
WORKED COMPARISON
A lower commission can be the stronger primary recommendation
| Fictional offer | Fit / value | Funnel / rules | Economics / operations / resilience | Total | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Offer Cedar | 18 + 18 | 13 + 14 | 12 + 9 + 4 | 88 | Primary controlled test; strongest overall evidence. |
| Offer Quartz | 16 + 16 | 12 + 11 | 14 + 8 + 4 | 81 | Test as a price or use-case alternative. |
| Offer Ember | 15 + 9 | 8 + 12 | 15 + 6 + 2 | 67 | Do not lead with it; high payout cannot offset weak customer value and funnel risk. |
The numbers document judgment; they do not replace evidence. Attach a short note and source to every non-zero score so a later reviewer can understand why it was awarded.
APPLICATION & CONTROLLED TEST
Show the advertiser a real, relevant promotion plan
- Complete your public profile
Use accurate audience, geography, channel and traffic information. Verify the properties you genuinely control.
- Prepare relevant proof
Provide representative content, channel metrics with dates and a concise explanation of how the product fits your audience.
- Apply to the exact program
Confirm region and partner type, read the contract and answer surveys honestly. A specific note is stronger than a generic promise of volume.
- Record the baseline
Capture approval date, terms, landing page, link format, disclosure requirement, scorecard and unresolved questions.
- Run one measurable placement
Use permitted sub-IDs, a pre-declared period and enough qualified clicks to learn without exposing the business to unlimited cost.
- Diagnose the first weak checkpoint
Separate exposure, click, merchant conversion, validation and payment. Change one material variable at a time.
You are ready for Module 07 when you can produce a three-offer shortlist, show that every candidate passed the fatal gates, document current terms, defend every score with evidence and define how approved results will be measured.
PORTFOLIO CONTROL
Selection is a recurring process, not a one-time page edit
- Review terms, prices, claims, landing pages and availability on a scheduled cadence and before major campaigns.
- Use automated link checks as an alert, then manually verify the actual customer journey.
- Track each program's share of clicks, approved revenue and unpaid balance.
- Keep at least one credible alternative for important reader decisions and high-revenue placements.
- Set triggers for unusual reversal rates, delayed payments, broken tracking, worsening support or reputation events.
- Update or remove recommendations promptly when the product no longer serves the stated audience.
- Preserve dated evidence and change logs so corrections are explainable.
There is no universal safe concentration percentage. Set an internal threshold based on replacement difficulty, cash exposure and business maturity, then build alternatives before a single partner can halt the entire model.
APPLY AND REVIEW
Produce an offer-review dossier
Assignment
Choose one candidate product and apply the evidence gates in this lesson. Record the relevant product fit, source dates, promotional conditions still needing confirmation and the reason to recommend or decline it.
Worked example
A generous advertised reward can distract from a poor match to your audience. If you cannot explain who benefits from the product and what alternatives matter, treat the recommendation as incomplete before working on button placement.
Completion criteria
Submit the fit assessment, evidence log and decision. Preserve unresolved program terms as questions rather than turning them into confident public claims.
PRIMARY SOURCES
