THE EDITORIAL CONTRACT
The recommendation must be the result of the work, not its starting point
Affiliate content has two legitimate outcomes: helping a suitable reader choose confidently and helping an unsuitable reader avoid the wrong purchase. A commission can fund the work, but it cannot decide which facts, alternatives or limitations appear.
- Name the reader and the decision before selecting a keyword or product.
- Choose the page type from the uncertainty that must be resolved, not from its commission potential.
- Separate observed facts, official specifications, third-party evidence, user reports and editorial judgement.
- Include credible non-affiliate choices when they are relevant.
- State what was not tested, who should avoid the recommendation and when the answer may change.
If you did not use a product, do not describe a hands-on test. A researched overview can still be useful when its access level, sources and limitations are explicit.
DECISION JOURNEY
Map uncertainty before mapping pages
| Reader state | Question to resolve | Best supporting asset | Next useful action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Problem aware | What is happening, and is action necessary? | Explanation, diagnostic or foundational guide. | Understand options and constraints. |
| Solution aware | Which solution category fits the situation? | Method guide, alternatives page or decision framework. | Define requirements and shortlist. |
| Comparing | Which option wins for this use case? | Criteria-led comparison or ranked shortlist. | Inspect evidence for the leading options. |
| Validating | Will this particular product deliver under my conditions? | Single-product review, demonstration or case study. | Choose, trial or reject the product. |
| Implementing | How do I reach the promised result? | Step-by-step tutorial and troubleshooting guide. | Complete setup and verify the outcome. |
| Reassessing | Has price, performance or fit changed? | Updated review, migration guide or alternatives page. | Keep, change or cancel deliberately. |
Record one primary question, one page owner and one intended next action for every asset. If two proposed pages answer the same question for the same reader, consolidate them or give each a genuinely different use case.
CONTENT PORTFOLIO
Give every format a distinct job
Foundation guide
Defines the problem, vocabulary, solution categories, constraints and decision process. It should orient, not force an early product choice.
Tutorial
Helps a reader complete and verify a task. Its success metric is a working outcome, not an affiliate click.
Single review
Evaluates one product against disclosed criteria for named use cases, with evidence, drawbacks and alternatives.
Comparison
Applies the same important criteria to two or more realistic options and explains conditional winners.
Alternatives page
Serves people for whom the default choice fails because of budget, geography, skill, policy or capability.
Implementation support
Protects customer success after the click through setup, troubleshooting, migration, renewal and exit guidance.
A healthy cluster contains only the roles the decision needs. Do not publish a review, “best” list, versus page and alternatives page that repeat the same shallow product descriptions.
EVIDENCE STANDARD
Match claim strength to the evidence you actually possess
| Evidence level | What it can support | Required label or record |
|---|---|---|
| Controlled first-hand test | Observed workflow, measured result and reproducible limitation under stated conditions. | Device, plan, date, configuration, dataset, steps and raw result. |
| Ongoing first-hand use | Usability, support and operational experience across a stated period. | Plan, use case, dates, meaningful changes and evidence samples. |
| Guided access or demo | Demonstrated functions visible during controlled vendor or partner access. | Access type, who controlled it and what could not be verified independently. |
| Official documentation | Current specifications, prices, policies and described features. | Primary URL, market, plan and checked date; avoid converting promises into test results. |
| Independent external evidence | Additional context, benchmarks or recurring patterns when methodology is credible. | Original source, sample and limitations; do not present another review as your experience. |
| User reports | Signals worth investigating, not universal conclusions. | Source, date, sample bias and corroboration status. |
| Editorial inference | A reasoned conclusion that follows from cited evidence. | Use language such as “we infer” and show the premises. |
Maintain a claim ledger for consequential statements: claim, evidence type, source or artifact, market and plan, checked date, owner, expiry trigger and affected pages. A screenshot proves only what was visible under those conditions; it does not prove universal performance.
CONTENT BRIEF
Commission the decision, not a word count
- Reader and trigger
Define the reader's situation, experience, market, constraint and event that created the decision.
- Primary decision
Write the one question the page must answer and the choices genuinely under consideration.
- Search and channel context
Record the language people use, likely intent, competing answers and how the asset will be discovered or distributed.
- Decision criteria
Rank the factors that matter to this use case before testing or scoring products.
- Evidence plan
Specify which products, tasks, measurements, primary sources, screenshots and expert or customer inputs are required.
- Answer boundaries
List what the page will not claim, untested areas, excluded audiences, jurisdiction and known uncertainty.
- Commercial and compliance plan
Record relationships, required disclosure, program rules, link qualification and where a CTA is useful rather than intrusive.
- Ownership
Name author, reviewer, fact-check owner, update owner, publication gate and next review trigger.
A qualified writer should be able to explain what original work must be done and what evidence would change the intended answer before drafting begins.
TUTORIAL METHOD
A tutorial is complete only when the reader can verify the result
- State the outcome and fit
Show the finished result, intended user, plan or version, estimated effort, cost and prerequisites.
- Establish a safe starting state
Include backups, permissions, test environments and irreversible-action warnings where relevant.
- Use ordered, observable steps
Give one action per step, exact interface labels where stable and an expected state after important actions.
- Explain consequential choices
Tell readers why a setting is selected and when a different choice is appropriate.
- Verify independently
Provide a test, output or external check that confirms the task worked instead of relying on a success message alone.
- Recover from failure
Cover common symptoms, likely causes, safe rollback and the information needed for support.
- Close the loop
Explain maintenance, security, cost or renewal implications after setup.
Place a product recommendation where a tool is genuinely required. If the task works with several tools, explain the selection criteria and link to the relevant comparison rather than interrupting every step with the same CTA.
REVIEW METHOD
Show how the verdict was produced
| Review element | Professional standard |
|---|---|
| Scope | Exact product, plan, market, price basis, access type and test dates. |
| Use cases | Named readers and jobs; avoid a universal score that hides important differences. |
| Criteria and weights | Chosen from audience needs before results are known; explain why they matter. |
| Method | Tasks, configurations, sample, repetitions, measurements and comparison baseline. |
| Evidence | Original observations or measurements supported by appropriate visuals, outputs and sources. |
| Trade-offs | Benefits, drawbacks, missing features, switching costs and situations where another option wins. |
| Verdict | Best for, not for, confidence level, decisive evidence and unresolved uncertainty. |
| Commercial context | Relationship, acquisition of access, affiliate status and whether compensation affected neither method nor result. |
| Change record | Material product or verdict updates, not a cosmetic “fresh” date change. |
Google's review guidance emphasizes user perspective, expertise, evidence of experience, quantitative measurements, differentiation, benefits and drawbacks, comparable choices and reasons for “best” claims. Those are useful editorial controls, not a guarantee of rankings.
COMPARISON METHOD
Compare equivalent facts, then explain conditional winners
- Choose candidates a real reader would plausibly consider for the same decision.
- Compare the same current plan tier, market, billing period, tax basis and promotional assumptions.
- Use one evidence window and the same task or measurement method where possible.
- Separate eligibility gates from weighted preferences: an unavailable or prohibited product cannot win on score.
- Show total cost, renewal, required add-ons and switching cost — not only the introductory price.
- Declare “best for” named circumstances and explain the decisive trade-off.
- Include “neither” when no compared option meets the reader's requirements.
A weighted score is a decision aid, not objective truth. Publish the weights, units and missing data, and run a sensitivity check: if a small weight change reverses the winner, present the result as close rather than definitive.
COMMERCIAL PLACEMENT
Earn the CTA by completing the decision work first
Disclose early
Place a clear affiliate disclosure before or near the first commercial link and where a reader will actually notice it.
Use descriptive actions
“Check current price at…” is more honest than an unexplained “Best deal” button when price and terms can change.
Link at decision moments
Add a CTA after fit, evidence and relevant limitations are understood; repeat only when it helps a long page's navigation.
Preserve alternatives
Do not hide a stronger non-affiliate choice or make an unsuitable product appear eligible because it pays.
Separate fact from urgency
Verify deadlines, scarcity, bonuses and prices from the applicable market. Never invent pressure.
Respect link rules
Apply program, channel, disclosure and search-engine link-qualification requirements independently.
Track CTA position as an experiment only after the page already supports a sound decision. An uplift in clicks is not automatically an improvement if approval rate, customer outcome or trust declines.
INTERNAL LINK SYSTEM
Connect the next uncertainty, not just a keyword
| Link direction | Reader purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation → comparison | Move from category understanding to a credible shortlist. | “Compare managed WordPress hosts for a first business site.” |
| Comparison → review | Inspect the evidence behind a shortlisted option. | “See our Host A test method and limitations.” |
| Review → tutorial | Understand implementation before or after choosing. | “Follow the WordPress setup and verification process.” |
| Tutorial → troubleshooting | Resolve a likely failure without restarting research. | “If DNS still does not resolve, run these checks.” |
| Commercial page → disclosure/method | Inspect incentives and editorial process. | “How AffiliateBest tests products and earns revenue.” |
| Child → hub | Return to the complete decision model. | “See the full hosting decision guide.” |
Use normal crawlable HTML links with concise, descriptive anchor text. Keep canonical ownership clear: one primary page should answer each audience-intent combination, while supporting pages deepen a sub-question rather than competing with it.
UPDATE OWNERSHIP
Freshness is a control system, not a changed date
| Volatile element | Trigger | Required response |
|---|---|---|
| Price, discount or plan | Vendor notice, scheduled check or reader report. | Verify market and billing basis; update claim, CTA and comparison peers. |
| Feature or interface | Release, failed tutorial step or support signal. | Re-run affected steps; replace evidence and note material change. |
| Terms or traffic rule | Program communication or dashboard change. | Pause non-compliant promotion first; then update every affected asset. |
| Performance result | Infrastructure, method or version change. | Retest under documented conditions; do not silently reuse old numbers. |
| Availability or geography | Market expansion, restriction or closure. | Change eligibility, alternatives and regional wording. |
| Verdict | Decisive evidence or audience requirement changes. | Reapply the method and record why the recommendation changed. |
Assign each page an owner, next scheduled review and event triggers. High-volatility commercial pages may need frequent checks; durable educational pages should be reviewed when the underlying process or evidence changes. Do not promise a universal interval.
EDITORIAL WORKFLOW
Use gates so weak evidence cannot be polished into a strong claim
- Qualify
Confirm audience, decision, distinct intent, business fit, access and maintenance capacity.
- Brief
Approve criteria, evidence plan, boundaries, commercial relationships and ownership before drafting.
- Research and test
Capture sources, configurations, artifacts, negative results and uncertainties as the work happens.
- Draft from evidence
Lead with the answer the evidence supports; distinguish fact, observation and judgement.
- Specialist review
Check method, calculations, claims, completeness, accessibility and reader fit.
- Commercial/compliance review
Verify disclosure, program permissions, link destination, offer accuracy and pressure claims.
- Publish and verify
Check layout, links, tracking, indexability, metadata and the real reader path.
- Monitor and maintain
Review reader signals, approved outcomes, corrections, product changes and content decay.
Automation can help organize notes, compare records or flag changed pages, but the accountable reviewer must verify claims and evidence. Disclose the creation process when readers would reasonably need it to judge trust.
WORKED CONTENT CLUSTER
Example: hosting for a first service-business website
| Asset | Decision job | Original work | Commercial role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting foundation guide | Define hosting types, resources, renewal, backups, support and migration risk. | Decision framework and terminology checks. | No forced winner; routes qualified readers onward. |
| Beginner-host comparison | Shortlist options for a defined budget, region and support need. | Same-plan cost table, support tasks, setup checks and eligibility gates. | Conditional winners plus a credible non-affiliate option. |
| Single-host review | Validate the leading option for that use case. | Account access, setup record, measured tasks, limitations and dated plan facts. | Affiliate CTA after fit and material drawbacks. |
| WordPress setup tutorial | Help the purchaser reach a secure working installation. | Reproduced steps, expected states, external verification and rollback. | Recommendation only where hosting is required. |
| DNS troubleshooting guide | Resolve the most consequential setup failure. | Symptoms, diagnostic checks, causes, safe fixes and escalation data. | Customer-success value; no new sale required. |
The cluster earns trust because each asset does a different job. Its value does not depend on publishing five versions of “best hosting,” and its commercial pages are supported by educational and post-purchase content.
PRE-PUBLICATION GATE
Do not publish until the page passes the reader test
- The intended reader, triggering situation and primary decision are explicit.
- The page owns a distinct job and does not duplicate an existing answer.
- Consequential claims have current, accessible evidence and the access level is honest.
- Criteria reflect the audience's use case and were not reverse-engineered for a preferred winner.
- Important drawbacks, exclusions, uncertainty and credible alternatives are visible.
- Calculations, prices, markets, plan tiers and dates have been independently checked.
- Disclosure appears before or near commercial links; CTAs accurately describe the destination.
- Internal links support the next uncertainty with descriptive anchors.
- Author, reviewer, update owner, triggers and correction path are assigned.
- A reader can act, verify the result or decide not to buy without needing a second page to correct omissions.
You are ready for Module 10 when you can produce one approved brief, explain the evidence standard, choose the correct page type, demonstrate how a verdict was reached, place commercial links responsibly and show who will maintain every volatile claim.
APPLY AND REVIEW
Create a recommendation brief with original value
Assignment
Write one comparison or tutorial brief around a specific reader decision. Explain what evidence is needed, what you can contribute and how the page helps someone decide not to purchase when the product is unsuitable.
Worked example
A fictional comparison lists features but never connects them to the reader’s work. Improve the brief by describing the decision criteria, a practical use case and limitations. Avoid adding a verdict that your research does not support.
Completion criteria
Submit the reader question, outline, evidence needs, original contribution and draft next step. Review whether the page serves its promise before considering the commercial placement finished.
PRIMARY SOURCES
Official guidance used for this editorial system
Source review: . Search documentation, advertising rules and platform terms change. Re-check the rules that apply to the target market, channel and program before publication.
Next: measure the complete affiliate funnel
Module 10 builds the beginner measurement system for outbound clicks, attribution gaps, approved conversions, revenue, costs, content performance and decision-making without confusing platform reports with cash.
